The Nautilus circles the ship. Conseil said he would follow wherever his master went. The men spent their days talking, reading, and observing the marvelous sea life that swam before the viewing stations in the salon.
He persuaded the natives of the island to tell him about the shipwreck. As the book progresses, the men hunt underwater, fight sharks, encounter Atlantis, and fight off giant squid. Nemo continues to act strangely, and is not seen by the narrator for weeks.
Aronnax observed how sound was felt more strongly because water is a greater conductor of sound than air. All that Aronnax missed was conversation. Upon entering the water, the heavy equipment became weightless and the men moved freely.
Conseil remarked that Ned Land, a positive spirit and Anglo-Saxon, needed meat and brandy to be happy. He brought remains of the shipwreck back to Charles X.
It is by accident that he is invited on the expedition to hunt the Nautilus. All food comes from the ocean. One of the crew is Ned Land, an expert harpooner. There is fish, but fish such as Aronnax never before tasted.
The reader must consider the possibility that the vessel is responsible for this attack, as it has attacked many other ships. Once the men suited up they were released onto the ocean floor.
Aronnax, Land, and Conseil find themselves floundering in the water. They thought he had gone mad, as he was headed full speed to the vast expanse of sharp coral. He refused to go any farther.
Finally an American frigate, the Abraham Lincoln, is fitted out to find and to destroy the mysterious sea creature. They would be stuck for four days until the tides were in their favor to carry them away.20, Leagues Under the Sea: LITERARY ANALYSIS / ONLINE NOTES by Jules Verne Cliff Notes™, Cliffs Notes™, Cliffnotes™, Cliffsnotes™ are trademarked properties of the John Wiley Publishing Company.
